In a move that surprised many (certainly us), Senator Hillary Clinton scored remarkable upset wins in Texas and Rhode Island.  Her victory in Ohio was expected, but the margin of victory was much higher than the polls had indicated.

It appears that Mrs Clinton’s late stage, mud-slinging campaign against Senator Barack Obama worked.  The “3 am phone call” advertisement struck a cord with Democratic constituents who made up their minds in the last few days before the primary.

Clinton described her Tuesday victories as “a new chapter in this historic campaign,” while the Obama campaign sought to downplay her wins by emphasizing his lead in the battle for pledged delegates.

The real question remaining is what does this mean going forward?

Obama is now at 1,451 delegates.

Clinton is now at 1,365 delegates.

With 2,025 needed to secure the nomination.

This now looks like it will come down to an old fashioned, backroom, brokered election in which the Clinton dynasty has the decided edge.  Wild cards are John Edwards, premature VP announcements, and of course, some type of dream ticket with Hillary and Barack, or Barack and Hillary.

The latter will take longer to work out.
