Patriot malaise promotes Giant defensive win

The New York Giants are the Superbowl 42 Champions.

New York, which lost six of 16 games in the regular season, prevailed 17-14 at University of Phoenix Stadium.

The Giants went 83 yards in 12 plays on their winning drive, with David Tyree making a 32-yard reception on a third-and-5 with 59 seconds left.

The Patriots played poorly, including Tom Brady, league MVP.  Brady’s read’s were slow, his accuracy non-existent, and his offensive line got pushed around all day like a bunch of schoolgirls.

Defensively, the Pats were ok, holding the Giants to 3 through the first half.  However, late in the fourth quarter, they let Eli Manning out of several key sacks, including what turned out to be the game winning drive.

Manning’s scramble and “hail Mary” pass to  Tyree, who managed to reel in the 33-yard catch by initially pinning the ball on his helmet with one hand, gave New York the ball at the New England 24-yard line.

This was followed by a “corner of the endzone, every coach in the world should have been looking for” pass to Plaxico Burress for the winning touchdown.  Don’t blame Hobbs for that score, blame Belichek.

At the end of the day, if was great Giant defense combined with poor Patriot offense, defense, and coaching that ended the perfect season.
