Did Gonzales make us Blink?
Sunday, March 25, 2007 10:40I’m not one for piling up bad news with more bad news, but this latest Justice Department probe is approaching the ridiculous. Even Diane Feinstein can feel that we’ve “tipped” and she can now exert some more of her muscle. Not a pleasant thought.
I’m pouring through Malcolm Gladwell’s latest book, “Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking” and the irony is not lost in this latest Gonzales episode. Many of you remember Gladwell from “The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference.”
In his latest work, Gladwell’s premise is that human beings have the capability to make split second assessments, very accurately, in the blink of an eye. He goes on to support it with very interesting stories and anecdotes. He refers to what many have called first impression or unconscious recognition and goes on to support it with entertaining stories.
Its a shame that he published the book before the Alberto Gonzales hearings (and probably resignation) were completed. It would make a nice addition.
Is there anyone in America that heard this story and was unable to discern the truth in a blink of an eye? Is there really a need to conduct lengthy and expensive hearings to view the circling pool of Democratics attack enough and win their point?
Gladwell makes the point that our unconscious minds recognize the truth in a blink of an eye, but our conscious minds take longer, as they’ve been trained by life experience, caution, and in this case, political leanings.
Is there any question as to whether the United States has “tipped?”
