Schwarzenegger pushes back on Bush
Friday, June 23, 2006 23:01In the latest episode of political wrestling, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger this week body slammed a request from the Bush administration to send an additional 1,500 National Guard troops to the Mexico border.
California has committed to putting 1,000 troops on the border by July 31 and has 250 there already.
While this latest denial can be viewed as a cosmetic rebuff, it does seem to reflect Schwarzenegger’s distancing himself from the Administration’s policies as he takes to the road in his re-election bid for Governor.
Has the Schwarzenegger “brand” changed? Has he terminated his first candidacy? Is Arnold too weary for a sequel?
The voters of California voted for Schwarzenegger because of his resolve and consistency. His style was brash, but his ideas rang true to an overwhelming majority. He rode the first election and platform into the Republican convention like a triumphant Olympian and his party clamored for more.
Elections are times for self-reflection. Arnold should remember that voters want leaders who lead, not politicians who waiver. We have enough of those.
So, is the policy to put 1,000 guardsmen on the border but not 2,500? Is the Governor for this policy or against it?
We believe that standing tall, making a decision, and explaining it clearly is really the only way he’ll be back.
